People usually associate kebabs with the midnight craving you get after a long night out with some mates. We often refer to kebabs as that massive spinning piece of processed meat which makes it way onto a piece of lebanese bread with lettuce, tomato, onion and perhaps tabouli, also known as a doner kebab. What many Sydney siders don’t realise is that there are other forms ok kebabs, namely the shish kebabs.

One of my favorite places to have shish kebabs is without a doubt in the hustle and bustle of Auburn road, Auburn. Shish kebabs are marinated pieces of meat grilled on skewers and often served with grilled turkish bread and sides.

New Star Kebabs is one of many takeaway establishments situated on Auburn Road. On either side of the road you are inundated with various options on where to satisfy your meat skewer cravings. They serve more than just shish kebabs, but we didn’t travel all the way to Auburn for pizza or doner kebabs.

The coffee wasn’t too bad, better than McCafe but don’t expect Toby’s Estate or Campos quality.

Kebabs freshly grilled on charcoal

The marinated meat skewers are cooked on demand when you order. They are grilled on flaming hot charcoals and have a fantastic aroma.

Mixed plate (lamb, chicken, beef) $19

The servings are extremely generous for the price you pay. The mixed plate consists of three types of meat, chicken, beef and lamb. The chicken breast pieces and steak cubes are marinade in pepper paste, spices and olive oil, whereas the lamb kebab consisted of ground lamb seasoned with herbs (cumin, parsley and mint). There is a bloke out the front of the restaurant grilling them on hot beads of charcoal, so you are guaranteed tender and juicy bits of meat. Each pieces of meat was seared to perfection, retaining the sweet juices of the meat, which complimented the aromatic herbs used in the marinade. You are also given pieces of toasted turkish bread. I usually wrap my pieces of meat with some pickles , onion and tomato into the turkish bread.

Sides (Onion, tomato and tabouli, cabbage)

The mixed plate comes with a generous serving of pickled cabbage, onion with a touch of paprika and tomatoes mixed with tabouli. Each side has it’s own unique flavour which is higlighted by the sourness of the cabbage, the hint of paprika in the onion and the tabouli in the tomato.

Mixed dips

The turkish bread is a great complinent to the vast array of dips available. Unfortunately, I cant remember what we exactly ordered but it did contain some baba ghanoush and tzatziki.

Happy owners mean happy customers

We had a rather large group and these guys were great. They made sure we had a table inside because of the unusually cold temperates that night.

At first you might be a bit overwhelmed with all the different kebab stores on Auburn Road. Judging by the lack of empty tables at each establishment, you probably can’t go wrong with any of them for your shish kebab fix. If it’s your first time, try out the mixed plate as it has a bit of everything.
