Singapore Shiok, Eating World Foodcourt, Chinatown Sydney

Sometimes I think the best part about having 5 people contributing to a blog is that I’m constantly finding out about new things to eat in Sydney. When Howie first put up his 25 things every Sydney food lover should try my eyes went straight to point 14. Hainan Chicken Rice from Singapore Shiok in Eating World Foodcourt, Chinatown.

How was it possible that I had never tried this Hainan Chicken before? Obviously this was a fault that needed to be rectified immediately, and by immediately I mean that I wandered by Eating World Foodcourt 3 months later solely by chance and decided to stop in. And you know what? Howie was right, this is the best Hainan Chicken in Sydney.

Half Roasted Chicken Meal $18.80

Half Roasted Chicken Meal $18.80

Hainan Chicken is a simple dish, essentially it’s just chicken poached lightly in stock and served with soup and rice cooked in the same stock. This simplicity is what makes it easy to get it wrong, but the first time I try the chicken from Singapore Shiok I know I’m onto a winner.

We’ve cheated a little and ordered the Roast Chicken, wanting the crunch and flavour of the roasted skin along with the delicately soft flesh. Served along with a few slices of tomato, cucumber, and beansprouts all marinating in a soy stock mixture, altogether it’s a single harmonious bite of sweet and savory and silence quickly falls over the table as we do our best to demolish everything on the plate.

Single servings of chicken are also available, it’s $10.80 for the set meal which includes the soup and Chicken Rice along with a serving of Chinese Vegetables and is my go-to if I’m eating alone. Tonight there are 3 of us and we’ve gone for the half chicken which arrives with 2 bowls of soup, rice as well as chilli and dark soy dipping dishes.

A whole chicken meal (Family Meal!) is also available and gets you an entire chicken along with 4 bowls of soup and rice! It’s a formidable feast but will feed 4 people easily and even with an extra serving of vegetables will cost you less than $10 a head. It’s easily my favourite Sydney CBD cheap eat and has become a regular Friday outing.

Prawn Noodle Soup (Har Mee) $10.50

Prawn Noodle Soup (Har Mee) $10.50

Of course, half a chicken isn’t enough to feed 3 starving girls! We’ve been dreaming of ordering the Har Mee ever since spotting it on another table the previous week, and thankfully since my cold from hell has finally left we’ve added it to our menu tonight. The noodles take a little longer than the chicken to arrive but when they do, it’s a bowl of deliciously dark soup stock which has the subtle but addictive taste of prawns. While the half soft boiled egg seems like a rather random addition to the mix, the generous servings of prawns and noodles make for a perfect side to our chicken rice.

D's awesome cupcakes

No dinner is complete without dessert! Luckily Linda’s partner in crime D has come to our rescue tonight with a batch of adorable mini cupcakes left over from her latest baking spree. They’re amazingly rich with a super light rose bud of cream on top to finish them off.

Friday night success!

Singapore Shiok is easily my favourite place to eat in Chinatown, if you’ve tried a Hainan Chicken that can top this or can recommend another foodcourt stall let me know!

Yesss I love Eating World!! Gotta agree, the chicken rice is very impressive, especially for the price. I usually get the regular hainan chicken but the roast chicken looks pretty damn good too, I better try it next time!

    Hi Minh,

You are yet another blogger who have raved about this place and I have yet to try it and I’m getting very curious. The chicken rice looks pretty good but I’m not sure about the prawn noodles though. Why is the soup so dark in colour?

Dare I say the best food court prawn noodles in Australia is at Lee’s Malaysian in the HSBC building at the corner of Bathurst and George street. Nobody comes even close to the flavour and taste of this particular dish :) :)

To be honest I don’t eat Prawn Noodles very often, so I’m not sure what an authentic one looks like! But thanks for the recommendation, will definitely check it out next time I’m around that area!

Ohh yesh! I’ve frequented this place and the hainan chicken rice beats the likes of Temasek and Ginger & Spice. It doesn’t hurt your pocket too! Next time, try the Hokkien mee in Shiok. So good I’m drooling right now :)

There aren’t that many people who don’t like hainan chicken rice so it looks like we’ll have to pay a visit soon. :-)

I think a few years back Eating World was pretty dodgy, but they went through a pretty big renovation a while back and it’s cleaned up a lot!

There use to be a hainan chicken and rice place in Dixon foodcourt opp to the bar that was the best in Sydney no doubt and I had way too many before. The meat was smooth as, no bone and the rice had the perfect flavours. Whats more it only was $7 !!!! I still remembered it had a fluro green sign. Too bad it close down back around 2006 or so …
