Jurassic Lounge, Australian Museum, Sydney CBD

The Jurassic Lounge is the Australian Museum as I always wanted to see it, dark and mysterious with a splash of white (wine, that is). On Tuesdays the museum opens up its doors after hours to host the Jurassic Lounge, an after hours event that features live art, funky lighting, live music and of course, alcohol.

Where the wild things are

Where the wild things are

I have to admit, I was one of those kids who loved to sneak around in the dark after my bedtime. With a torch as my trusty aide I would wander the hallways before getting busted by my mum and sent promptly to bed! So when I heard about the Jurassic Lounge from Astroboy I knew it was only a matter of time before I popped by for a visit, but it just so happened to be with a few other people I knew.

Entry to the Lounge is $15 which also nets you a glass of alcohol, wine or beer depending on your preferences and access to the museum is surprisingly unrestricted. Like almost every kid who went to school in Australia, I’ve lost count of the number of school excursions where we were dragged over to the museum but I’m surprised for a moment when I see my first dinosaur skeleton, at just how much smaller it is than my memories.

While we’re running amok with our torches we make sure to keep an eye on the twitter account (coincidentally sweeping all of the prizes in that night’s #findit competition LOL). The Silent Disco is a moment’s embarrassment before the music takes over and we’re bopping to the beats but tonight it’s the VJs who have our hearts with their doof doof doof music and funky laser display.

DJs aren’t the only drawcard tonight as each week live artists also rotate in the Skeleton Room to perform for the crowd who are content to drift about. Lily So is my favourite performance of the night, and is actually a duo who harmonise gorgeously and laugh off a missed chord at the start of the set.

There are also live talks on tonight with National Geographic photographer Jason Edwards which sadly we miss, but it’s not until the next day that I realise that Squishies and F were also at the Jurassic Lounge at that very talk lol.

Mini Pies, 3 for $6 (Vegetarian and Meat)

Mini Pies, 3 for $6 (Vegetarian and Meat)

It’s not a post without a picture of food! Our options are rather limited to a selection of Antipasto and mini pies, but as a stomach liner it’s more than adequate (and surprisingly tasty).  Suze has gone for the vegetarian option while I’m sticking to the old school “Meat” option which is indeed very meaty.

But of course, we can’t leave without one more dance with the VJs.

The Jurassic Lounge is a great initiative by the Australian Museum, I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t been to the Museum for at least a decade (oops showing my age now) but opening up the museum while showcasing live art and music is a stroke of brilliance. I only wish we had more events like this happening around Sydney!

I haven’t been to the museum in over a decade either! LOL

Very creepy skeleton on the rocking chair ….

It’s difficult to tell how small those mini pies are but they look cute. :-)

Running around with torches in a eerily lit museum was lots of fun. And no shots of the long exposure torch madness?

Sounds great – I wonder why they don’t do it year round…?

    Seconding Tina’s comment.

The T-Rex’s shadow looks like a magnified louse. Probably not the best monument to his/her former dominance. Wish they’d had this when I was at school. Sounding old. Whee.

  6. This looks like a rockin’ night out… flintstone’s style. You’ve inspired me, I’m going to try make it to the last one next Tuesday. Love your pics!

    Great post!

This would totally bring a whole new experience to anyone who haven’t been in a museum for a long time (guilty as charged). I like the originality and the Skeleton Room is definitely something new to check out. Thanks for sharing!
