Thanon Khao San, Haymarket

Minh and I walked past this restaurant a while ago and was drawn to its decor that was complete with a tuk-tuk! We agreed that we had to try it out, especially since the space was previously occupied by the pretty decent I-San, and promptly hit Ho’s Kitchen for some delicious warm egg tart.

We dined here the night before she was to leave for her Malaysia trip with Helen, Billy and Simon and embarrassingly I am only blogging about it now because I didn’t know the name of this restaurant. I thought calling it “That-Thai-Place-Next-To-Sukjai-Thai is a bit mean and not very helpful.

Mind you, I did try to Google for it and looked on Eatability, but got nowhere. I even tried to Google its address. I really did try!! Ironically enough, searching for it now with its name brings up quite a few Google hits with its address too! Bah, why didn’t it find that in the first place!?

But I digress…

Kiew Tod Khai - Deep Fried Wonton filled with Quail Egg served in Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce ($5)

As soon as Minh saw “quail egg” with “wonton” in the same sentence on the menu, she pounced on dish. I was intrigued to see how it would turn out and shouldn’t have been too surprised to see exactly that: deep fried wonton skin wrapped around a whole, boiled quail egg.

It was quite good actually and I liked the contrast between the crispy wonton skin and the softness of the egg.

Thai Coffee Blend and Lychee Blend ($3.90 each)

Minh ordered the strong Thai coffee blend and we were both surprised at how gigantic the lychee blend was. It was almost as big as our water bottle! My only gripe about the lychee drink was that, while delicious, it kind of had a slightly canned after-taste (but maybe that’s just me).

Yum-Look-Chin - Pork Ball Salad ($10.90)

The only thing I could eat from this dish was the soft pork balls (which I ate quite a lot of) – everything else proved a bit too spicy for me, sadly enough (you guys must be getting sick of hearing that! Haha). I think Minh liked it as the dish was almost empty by the end of our dinner.

Pla Nung See Eiw - Steam Fish with Saya Sauce ($19.90)

The steamed fish was well-cooked and seasoned and quite delicious with the sticky rice.

“There’s something therapeutic about pulling the bones from the fish,” Minh commented as she cleanly lifted the bones out and set them to one side. Meanwhile, I watched with envy – I always seem to leave bits behind.

Tuk-tuk!!

While I quite liked the decor of the restaurant, it was a bit open to the elements and had a frigid wind blowing in now and again that left us shivering. We felt a bit bad for our sweet waitresses, as they were wearing short denim skirts with tights and definitely looked quite frozen.

The food was decent and value for money with very attentive wait staff. Leaving the restaurant, we noticed that the cart outside was selling desserts take-away (don’t know how we missed it coming in)! Being rather full and having to pass up on the desserts (okay, also we were kinda cold and wanted to go home), I think next time I pass this restaurant, I’ll grab some desserts on my way out. Nom nom nom.

Good to see there are two pretty decent Thai restaurants side by side. As tacky as it may be to some people, I love that they’ve put a tuk tuk in the entrance

I’m kind of surprised that Melbourne doesn’t have as many Thai places as Sydney – thought they were just as prolific! Interesting!!

      Awww thanks =P

    rough translation of sukanya:

The restaurant is decorated in classic restaurant. Creativity in dressing down menu with Tuk Tuk Thai desserts and cart selling the input tray, 3-4 indicates the unique Thai culture. Solicitation customers want to shop to taste authentic Thai taste ค่ะ I walk through the store three times depending on the taste never once Yesterday her husband went to the kitchen at 16:30 pm to closed. I also do not have the opportunity to taste food restaurant Khao San Road. Next น่ะ ค่ะ not miss
