On my way to and from F’s home, I always pass this one restaurant that is always packed. Well, admittedly it’s the only restaurant that I pass. Anywho, we always said that we will go, but we never managed to do so – we even made a booking one night but had to break it on the day.
Due to a series of unfortunate events (I got stood up by Minh haha), F and I fortunately got to finally visit this mysteriously frequented restaurant.
The menu is quite extensive and it took us a while to decide what to order. Sometimes it sucks ordering for two people – you want to eat/try more dishes, but you can’t because you’re physically constrained by your stomach real estate. Much sadness.

Crostini - Mixture of Wood Fired Bread topped with Tomato, Bocconcini, Basil, Smoked Salmon, Avocado and Spanish Onion ($15)
I’ve been noticing that sometimes what’s on the menu isn’t quite what makes it onto the plate. I’m not sure why this is and I’m a bit too timid to ask the wait staff about the missing component.
So when our crostini was missing avocados and spanish onions, I kept mum. Despite the missing components, the salad didn’t feel like it was missing any thing and I found the salad to be quite decent and refreshing.
The scallops were the biggest scallops we’ve had “EVAAAAR” (as described by F) seen. Though being quite numerous and plump-looking, they were a bit of a disappointment. I thought they were slightly chewy and could have used more of a sear to them, but I really liked the creamy sauce it was drenched in.
I guess size doesn’t always matter, aye?
F thought the risotto was decent: cooked well and quite sizeable, though it possibly could have done with a bit more of the creamy and buttery sauce.

Fettucini Pollo - Tender Chicken Pieces with Sun-Dried Tomatoes cooked in a Basil Pesto and finished with a touch of cream and Napolitana sauce ($17)
I personally thought my pasta tasted better than F’s risotto with its creamy, delicious sauce and al dente pasta. It didn’t really seem like it at the time, but the serving was massive and somehow F managed to help me eat more than half of it (and finish his own dish). Sometimes I think F is a black hole for food.
For the first time in a long time, we had debated whether or not to have dessert. The dessert menu mainly offered the usual panna cotta and tiramisu – there’s nothing wrong with that, I think we just felt like something different. We were about to decline and ask for the bill when our waitress mentioned that the dessert special was pineapple fritters. Pineapple fritters!!!
Needless to say, we went for it.
Like all of the previous dishes, this dessert was pretty big. The fritters were huge circles – who knew pineapples grew so big!? Sadly the photo doesn’t show just how big they are, but they were honestly massive!
I loved the generous amounts of cinnamon that were sprinkled on top and how the batter was quite light. The vanilla bean gelato was a really awesome final touch too.
I really like huge, open kitchens like this one. It’s always fun and amazing to watch chefs and the team work together to create food that eventually ends up on our table.
Il Piatto is a family-friendly restaurant with great service and pretty decent fare. I have to admit that while the food was decent, I don’t think it explains the numerous amount of customers night after night. There must be something about the restaurant that draws in the crowd.
Perhaps we didn’t order what they’re really known for – maybe they’re known for their pizza and not quite their pasta dishes (though their sauces are so very, very good). There were lots of pizzas on offer and I think this restaurant deserves a second visit to try some of them out.
It’s like a mystery I must unravel!

Love the way the mint leaves are sort of wallpapered to the gelato!

Hahaha that was one of my first thoughts on seeing the dessert and my first act was to peel it off XD
Oh dear – the constraints of stomach real estate are sad aren’t they! The pineapple fritters sound great, and I love the way they’re served with good icecream not just the regular stuff.

We were really surprised by the quality of the ice cream used! Mmmm I could do another pineapple fritter right now…

The scallops don’t look very pan-fried from the photo, but I am excited by the pineapple fritters! If only more places had pineapple fritters on their dessert menu!
Yeah =T Imagine our sadness when we saw just how white the scallops were!
Totally agree with you there =D They were so full of awesome!
