Moo Gourmet Burgers, Coogee

A few months ago, Sam told me about Moo Gourmet Burgers (rather it was his exclamations of “duck and bacon burger!!! BBQ PORK BELLY BURGER!!!” that got my attention) and ever since then, I became obsessed with them. It wasn’t until the end of December that I actually got to eat it and boy, I wasn’t disappointed. So good was my first experience that F and I actually went there not twice but three times (four for him) during the space of 3 weeks.

With a such a range of burgers to choose from, I found it difficult to choose the first time we went. I wished that we could have rallied more (i.e. any) of our friends to join us just so I could taste more than just two burgers. Sigh, if wishes were burgers and stomach space.

Wagyu Beef Burger - 100% Wagyu Beef, Mixed Leaf Lettuce, Slow Roasted Tomatoes, Home-Made Mayonnaise and Tomato Relish ($13)

Eventually, F decided to get the Wagyu beef burger. The thick, moist and tender Wagyu patty accompanied by the lightly cumin-spiced, juicy slow-roasted tomatoes, fresh lettuce and a generous slather of mayonnaise and relish was more than enough to send us both into bliss. The light sour dough bun was just perfect: not too crunchy and not too soft. This burger has remained as his favourite burger from Moo and it’s not hard to see why.

Duck and Bacon Burger - Duck and Pork Patty, Beechwood Smoked Bacon, Mixed Leaf Lettuce, Tomato, Home-Made Mayonnaise and Spicy Orange Chutney ($16.50)

I love duck and I love bacon – why not have both?! My eyes feasted on the burger, taking in the glistening patty and bacon. I knew immediately that this was going to be fantastic. The patty was gloriously succulent and tender and was wonderfully paired with the lightly smoked bacon. The fresh tomato and lettuce added to the juicy component of the burger, while the home-made mayonnaise was a delicious, creamy accompaniment. The spiced orange chutney wasn’t at all spicy (so I took this as meaning having some sort of non-spicy spice in it) and brought a refreshing taste to the burger.

Hot Chips - Chunky Home-Style Chips with Sweet Chilli Jam and Aioli ($5 + $1.50 for each sauce)

Clearly not anticipating the size of the burgers, we ordered hot chips – because what are burgers without chips?! We quickly concluded that it wasn’t the best of ideas, as most of our stomach real estate were hoarded by the burgers, and sadly couldn’t finish the wonderfully crispy-yet-soft chips. I hate wasting food, so we decided not to get them next time.

Personally, I thought they were better than the usual sort of chips you would get at cafe or what-have-you and the sauces were perfect accomplices – both were definitely of the better tasting sauces I’ve had. The aioli was our favourite as it was smooth, creamy and rather garlicky without being obnoxiously so.

BBQ Pork Belly Burger - Inglegreen Premium Pork Belly Patty, Peanuts, Mixed Leaf Lettuce, Tomato, Asian BBQ Sauce and Ginger and Plum Relish ($16.50)

Seeing that I totally butchered the last two burgers with my knife, F tactfully said that he should divide the burgers for Round 2. I can’t deny something that has photographic evidence and so I handed it over to F.

I was so excited about the prospect of having a barbeque pork belly burger that I was willing to bear through my strong dislike of ginger, which is part of the relish. When it came out though, I felt my excitement deflate a little. I know I read “patty”, but mentally I was picturing and hoping for a nice slab of juicy belly.

Rallying through my initial disappointment, I began to eat. The patty continues the succulent and juicy trend Moo has, though this particular patty was dotted with half, unsalted peanuts, making for a slightly crunchy texture. The relish had a fairly strong ginger flavour that was almost overpowering, but the plums made it more bearable by having a sweet after taste.

Moo Burger - 100% Certified Australian Angus Beef, Beetroot, Egg, Pineapple, Cheese, Bacon, Mixed Leaf Lettuce, Tomato, Mayonnaise and Tomato Relish ($16)

I had meant to order Moo’s signature burger, the Black and White, but when I was ordering, “.. and a Moo Burger please” tumbled from my lips without realising my mistake until the burger arrived at our table.

It was the best mistake I could have ever made and it didn’t hurt to discover much later on that the Moo burger is Moo’s other signature burger.

While the other burgers I’ve had were so very delicious, I felt that this burger surpassed all of them. It even looked more spectacular than the Duck and Bacon burger. I think it’s the wobbly egg yolk that made the greatest impact – you just knew that when you pierce the yolk, it would come dribbling down in a gloriously gooey mess.

Gooey goodness... nooooom

It’s hard to see exactly the enormity of this burger, but I had a stab in conveying it thus:

zomg!

It was a normal butter knife one would find in a perfectly ordinary kitchen and I was really surprised at how far up the burger went. I wondered how I would be able to fit it all in my mouth. It turns out I couldn’t and let’s just say that I was messier than usual.

Oh but it was so worth getting messy for! The Angus patty was pure bliss and added to it the slightly crispy bacon, gooey egg, sweet pineapple, and fresh tomatoes, beetroot and lettuce… oh! Unbelievably scrumptious beyond words. True, the bottom bun got a bit soggy, but I thought the flavours more than compensated for something I’d normally get annoyed with.

Chickpea Burger - Chickpea, Couscous and Cheddar Cheese Patty with Baby Spinach, Tomato, Home-Made Mayonnaise and Tomato Relish - with added Mozzarella Cheese ($12.50 +$1.50)

I stared at F when he said he wanted to try the Chickpea burger. “Chickpea…” I repeated rather dumbly and floundered to ask why on earth he’d get something vegetarian when there was the turkey and lamb to try. I was surprised (to say the least) at his choice, as he’s a huge meat eater. Just when you think you know someone, they surprise you with something you thought would be out of character for them.

It was a lot better than I thought it be, I must admit. The patty of chickpea and couscous held together by cheddar cheese was moist and had a slightly crumbly texture – it was not at all dry as I had fretted (and was quite glad that I was wrong). F added on mozzarella cheese for an extra $1.50, which I was doubly glad for it, as it gave the burger that little extra oomph in taste.

Black and White Burger - 100% Certified Australian Black Angus Beef, Mixed Leaf Lettuce, Tomato, Fried Free-Range Egg, Mozzarella Cheese, Home-Made Maoynnaise and Tomato Relish ($13.50)

The Black and White burger, which I was meant to order when we there for the second time, is one of two Moo’s signature burgers. Looking as impressive as the Moo burger (and just as big), my eyes were drawn to the humongous slab of mozzarella on top of the Angus patty. Oh my, talk about cheesy goodness.

The burger was almost as messy (for me anyway) as the Moo burger and was almost just as good. Almost, but not as good. I wasn’t sure then what it was, as the patty is nothing less than perfection (as usual) with the freshest of produce fairly bursting with flavour, but now I think I’ve pinned it down: the absence of pineapple and beetroot. The two really brought a bright and refreshing flavour to the burger.

L to R: Beach Blonde - Crunchie Chocolate, Ice Cream, Caramel and Chocolate Syrup - and MooTeaser - Maltesers, Ice Cream, Chocolate Syrup and Malt ($6.50 each)

I really wanted to try one of the Moo Shakes and I’m glad we decided to try them on our last visit.

The caramel syrup in the Beach Blonde reminded me of sun-streaked hair and it was sweet without being unbearably so. We both favoured the MooTeaser shake though, as it really tasted like a Malteser in drink form! Both shakes were wonderfully thick with quite a lot of ice cream and small chunks of their respective chocolate namesakes.

We noticed that the Moo Milk Shakes comes in the metal mixer cup! The kid who was drinking from it was most pleased.

Mmm burgers...

Redstar Luxury Burgers
in Wanaka, New Zealand is our burger benchmark and after a short discussion, F and I agreed that these burgers were pretty much on par. Well, to be honest, the word “discussion” is a bit misleading, as it was more of a slightly incoherent dialogue that went along the lines of:

“Oh my god, this is so good! As good as Redstar?!”
“Oh gods, yes!!! SO GOOD!!!” *nom nom nom nom*

So needless to say, there were much unashamed revelling in the scrumptious flavours of the burgers for all three visits, which I thought was no mean feat. Moo Gourmet Burger is staffed by friendly and quite peppy young ladies (we noticed that at all three visits had only waitresses, no male wait staff) and the back courtyard is quite lovely though depending on the time of day, it can be quite hot as there’s no cover from the sun. Oh! And watch out for unsuspecting wobbly tables, there were a couple around in the courtyard during our third visit, though they most probably would have been fixed by now.

Moo Gourmet Burgers has two restaurants open: one in Coogee and the other in Manly, where (correct me if I’m wrong) Coogee Manly is the original restaurant (thanks Laura for the correction!).

Unfortunately, my experience was quite negative – over priced burgers, not really value for money, fish pieces delicious but small, salad a joke – mostly spinach, few tomatoes, all covered in grease! One of the waitresses at Coogee store was also really rude to us. Very disappointed and I certainly won’t be going back :(
