Edible immigration tales in Sydney

I stumbled upon Rachel Khoo by accident, while flicking through Kang’s blog londoneater which is one of my favourite food blogs outside of Australia. At the time, the terms ‘private kitchen’ and ‘underground dining‘ were being thrown around willingly which made me even more interested in the concept.

Kang’s coverage from behind the camera reinforced this interest, if only someone like Rachel could have a similiar concept in Sydney I thought at the time. Now there are probably things like this happening in Sydney already, if there are then I’d like to find out more!

Anyway, I didn’t have to wait long as this March she is making her way down to Sydney to host one of her own culinary events with her Sydney based friend Frankie Unsworth. They will be teaming up and cooking up a 6 course meal paired with wine. They both have blogs, so check them out here and here. What they are bringing to the table is something different and a bit of fresh dining air to Sydney.

If what I’ve seen on blogs is any indication, we’re in for a treat.

What ?

No backpacks or campers for these two poms, who are exchanging campsite for kitchen for their edible exploration of down under.

From penal colony to gold rush eldorado, to sun and surf mecca, we interpret the tastes and influences of past and present Australia over a six course dining experience.

A quirky interpretation of Australia’s gastronomy, from its traditional ‘floaters’ to the fusion flavours imparted by its waves of immigrants, there will be plenty of food for thought and stomach this March.

A not-to-be-missed occasion to experience the collaborative efforts of the food and design duo in an antipodean setting.

Frankie Unsworth

Since eating a tomato in Umbria, Frankie Unsworth’s life has never been the same. After three years as food editor on Taste Italia magazine and studying at Le Cordon Bleu Paris, Frankie put her whites where her mouth was and joined Nuno Mendes in his Loft kitchen in London. A passion for pastry and Paris united her with Rachel, where they indulged in lots of foodie fun. Since September she has been beached at Bondi, writing about design for a Surry Hills – based publishing house.

Rachel Khoo (R. Khook)

With an unconventional « food » background Rachel adds an unique touch to her work. She graduated from the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London with a Bachelors degree in Art & Design. After working for a luxury fashion brand doing PR and E-marketing she followed her passion for Pâtisserie to Paris where she studied at Le Cordon Bleu. She now mixes her “tasty” skills with her Art background to create original culinary events across Europe aswell as other culinary projects. Her first cookery book will be published by Marabout in January 2010.

Oh wow! Sounds like a very interesting concept. I would love to go but I don’t know if I would have someone to go with… :(

That’s the thing with these events, you’ll be dining with strangers anyway so it doesn’t matter :)

We started eatshowandtell in 2008, it was meant to be just a journal of where we ate. The first thing I usually do when I'm looking for a restaurant is check out eatability and the restaurant website. But what is usually missing is pictures of the food, how do I know I'm getting what I expect? This blog hopefully plugs that gap.
