Bredbo Pizzeria, Bredbo

In going to Thredbo from Sydney, you’ll inevitably pass through quite a few small towns. Though for me, only a few names really stick in my head, one of which is Bredbo (I admit it, it’s because it really sounds like Thredbo and I always giggle when I see it). Whenever we pass through this country town, a pizzeria always catches our eye with masses of cars parked in front (during business hours of course) and each time we tell each other that we should try it out – Mark even banned F and I from going there without him.
On our last trip to the snow (yes I know, it’s been a while – sorry!), we all finally made it to Bredbo Pizzeria and found that our dinner booking for 4.30pm was a bit superfluous: we were the only customers there. I’m sure I’m not the only person to somehow become super indecisive when too many options are available and it doesn’t help when the other parties in the group are blasé about the decision that is to be made (such as where to sit). Even though I know they don’t care where they sit and we’ve already sat down, I still fret for a bit about the chosen table. Ugh, it’s terrible.
After placing our order, a natural silence enveloped our table and I realised that this would be the perfect opportunity to take random photos of the restaurant without people staring like I’m some kind of weirdo. Only somehow that made me even more chicken to do it (go figure) and so that photo above was kindly taken by F. The owners were bemused at first at our request of taking photos while they worked, but good-naturedly went along with things.
Before we knew it, our garlic pizza had arrived and we dug in with gusto – a day of snowboarding really whets the appetite! It was a simple pizza – with the garlic, herbs and oil liberally covering the top – but the flavours hit the spot and I found that it only made me look forward to our chosen pizzas all the more!
We were all surprised to see the tall, generously whip-cream-topped iced chocolate and iced coffee come out with the cup that it was mixed in. The metal cup was filled at least a quarter of the way with the left over beverage. It felt like some thing old school eateries in the 1950′s or 60′s would have done, which made me smile. Though we thought that if the place was packed with customers, surely it wouldn’t be practical to do that with every customer who ordered an iced coffee or chocolate? Who knows, they could have heaps of those metal cups in the back hehe.
The iced chocolate was quite thick, as a generous amount of vanilla ice cream was used in the drink and I thought the balance between the amount of whipped cream, chocolate, milk and ice cream was pretty perfect. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back there for a glass!
To be honest, both pizzas tasted remarkably similar and in hindsight I think we should have opted for a beef topping instead. While both pizzas were pretty flavoursome, we unanimously preferred the BBQ Chicken pizza over the Pollo because of the sweet, juicy pineapple pieces – they just added an extra “oomph” of flavour to the pizza.
I think also unanimously the marinara was our least favourite, being too “fishy” overall, but it was nice they didn’t skimp on the seafood as I’ve seen some places have done.
I know it might sound crazy, but I love my pizza pan-fried – a la Pizza Hut style. I know some of my friends have scolded me about my preference, citing that I’m just filling up important stomach real estate with dough, but I love it for the thick, crunchy crust. Yes, I’m a crust eater – on sandwiches too! I kind of don’t get people who discard the yummy crusts, but each to their own hehe. The crust, though not as defined as the pizza chains, was gloriously crisp and crunchy. It wasn’t thick nor was it too doughy and I started to see the appeal of “thin” base pizzas.
Naturally we ordered far too much and the boys were practically groaning from being so full. The owners were more than happy to box up our leftover slices to take home and also to chat to us about living in Bredbo. We discovered that there’s most probably no more than 200 people living in Bredbo, where a little less than half of whom live in the actual town itself. The rest of the inhabitants live on the farms about 20 or 30 km out from the town centre. Interestingly, the owners originally came from Sydney’s western suburbs (Kellyville or something like that – Blacktown? In any case, they came from somewhere in that area) and decided to buy the pizzeria from the original owners a couple of years back. They haven’t looked back since, absolutely loving the country life.
If you ever find yourself passing through Bredbo and feeling peckish, definitely drop in for a pizza or two served with cheerful and friendly service. I know we most probably will be during the next snow season.

Love the look of that marinara pizza and the copious topping! Looking forward to more reviews from the nearby towns of Credbo, Ledbo, and Hedbo.
