Working in the City has it’s good and bad points. The good is that I am close to a lot of the Sydney International Food Festival offerings. The bad, I am going to be a poor man when this month is over. But perhaps I’ll worry about that later, after all I can always make money again .. right ?
The first day of SIFF saw me head to Uccello for their Let’s do Lunch menu. During the month of October, participating restaurants offer a $35 menu with one main course plus coffee, and a glass of matching Brown Brothers wine, Coopers beer or a 500ml bottle of S.Pellegrino sparkling or Acqua Panna still mineral water, a great way to sample the menu of some great restaurants. Like a few restaurants during SIFF, Uccello offer 3 choices for Let’s Do Lunch. Luckily I was dining with a few friends and we managed to cover the entire menu plus a dessert.

I wasn’t sure whether paying $35 for a pasta dish was a good idea or not, usually it’s copious amounts of pasta and little else. It seems like Uccello didn’t skimp on anything, with a generous and vibrant array of mixed seafood in this dish. It’s a relatively simple dish to make at home, so despite it tasting fresh and smelling like Italy, I’m not sure whether it was worth my $35 or not.

My mate The paladin is allergic to seafood, so he had no choice but to take the only meat dish on the menu. It turns out pre=”out “>to be probably the pick of the bunch of dishes. Five generous portions of veal are wrapped in salty san daniele ham and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The truffled gnocchi was surprisingly good, with the slightly creamy sauce letting the earthiness of the truffle shine through. A bit of green on the side doesn’t hurt either, the blandness of spinach is offset by subtle bursts of parmesan.

The Kathman and ”>Timbk2 order the blue eye and I get a nod of approval. I didn’t get to try it myself but am told the fish is cooked perfectly, albeit the flavours being a little bat ‘flat’. In its defense, the simple flavours of tomato, garlic, olive oil and basil should let the blue eye fillet be the protagonist of the dish instead.

For a small dessert we have some profiteroles stuffed with pistachio ice cream. I’m used to them usually filled with cream, but I am told that they are often stuffed with ice cream. Have I been hiding under a rock ? The pastry is soft, yet has enough chew to compliment the creaminess of the ice cream. All the flavour and textures here just work, especially the flood of chocolate sauce which covered the profiteroles.
Well there you have it, another Let’s do Lunch. With so many to get through and so little time, it’s hard to pick which one to spend my hard earned $35 on. Still confused on where to eat for SIFF ? the linguine looks great – the red and green of the tomato and parsley against the pasta always remind me of the italian flag. it makes me happy
and lol, i agree, i find that SIFF doesn’t really roll off the tongue or be recognised for what it stands. hopefully it’ll soon become part of the Sydney vernacular!
Definitely prefer ‘Good Food Month’. Maybe I’m stuck in my ways by ‘SIFF’ sounds like a try-hard version of ‘MIFF’ – Melbourne International Film Festival!
I’ll get used to it though. *sigh!* Guess it has more global appeal this way?
I can see myself doing nothing except the Sugar Hit at SIFF this year. I have to agree with you, I can’t justify to pay $35 lunch with a glass of wine. Is it a one-off special dish, or something you can order later after the SIFF event at a normal price? The SIFF is all fun and hyped, but one definitely needs a deep pocket for a happy ending.
Uccello was actually on my ‘to-go-to’ list.. not sure now anymore though

I agree, Good Food Month just has a nice ring to it that SIFF doesn’t quite have! I was considering going to Uccello as well but I had similar thoughts about paying $35 for a pasta dish. At least they were generous with the seafood
