Yuzu, Pyrmont

Is it just me, but as soon as you’re required to return to one area day after day, Lunchtime goes from, ‘Oh what should I try today?’ to ‘Guess it’s back to good old Woolies!’. It’s gotten to the point that I suspect that not only does my local Thai joint recognise my voice on the phone, but just by looking at me when I come in to pick up my order they know instantly what it is. That said, when a faithful reader emailed us with recommendations in Pyrmont I gleefully dragged an unsuspecting co-worker with me to go check out the newest Japanese kid on the block.

Pyrmont and Japanese restaurants seem to go hand in hand, within a 2 block radius I can think of at least four Japanese restaurants and Yuzu is only one block further. Situated towards the wharf direction we find ourselves momentarily lost before spotting Yuzu tucked away under a large apartment complex. With only 2 of us at the table, shockingly our stomachs are limited and we decide on 2 mains and a starter of Agadashi Tofu. Prices for dishes are reasonable ranging around the $8-9 mark with a $1 price raise for eating in. Apparently I have a secret weakness for ceramics and I can’t help but appreciate the heavy solidity of the bowls that each of our meals are served in. It’s been so long and I’ve eaten out of so many plastic bowls that I’d started to forget what it was like.

Agadashi Tofu $6.50 & Yuzu Tea $3.50

It seems wrong to start off a meal without Agadashi Tofu and the serving size is more than generous and a rather pretty sight, especially with the seaweed scattered across the top. I decide on the Yuzu tea rather than the typical Green Tea as I have often read Japanese recipes which call for its inclusion but sadly have never been able to find it locally. What seems like half a Yuzu has been crushed at the bottom of the cup and has a simple honey sweetened flavour.

Sashimi Salad $9.30

Co-worker L is along for the ride today and being on a diet opts for the Salmon Salad. You would be forgiven for not realising there was actually salad hidden underneath those slabs of Salmon and we are both surprised at the serving sizes. I steal a bite here and there and am satisfied at the moist texture and freshness of the fish, not surprising considering our proximity to the Seafood Fish Markets.

Sashimi Don $9.60

Be still my heart! If I was impressed at the amount of fish in the Salad I’m a little more than dumbstruck at my own bowl. Resembling a mini-rainbow in awesome raw fish form the rice bowl contains a variety of Sashimi including Salmon, Tuna and Kingfish with an artful sprinkling of chives (which I quickly remove from my bowl, I have a firm belief that chives have no place in my food!). Despite my enthusiasm for the dish, with its large serving towards the end I find myself wishing that I’d simply ordered a Sashimi main, thus forgoing the rice.

Yuzu offers a relaxed atmosphere to simply sit and enjoy your lunch, as we sat in the courtyard next to the tiny kitchen there remained a small regular crowd of people standing near the entrance waiting to pick up their takeaway meals. Competition is obviously tough in the Pyrmont market with so many Japanese restaurants to choose from, Yuzu’s only disadvantage would be its distance from the main strip, of course when I say distance it merely a matter of blocks. The relaxed atmosphere and quiet surroundings make it a perfect getaway for that slightly longer than allowed lunch on Fridays.

I like the look of these, and I love chives so those work for me :) The size of the sashimi don looks like generous value packed dish. I don’t go to Pyrmont much but if I’m in the area I’ll definitely have a look at Yuzu. Thanks!
