Spring Party, Merivale Ivy Bar, Sydney CBD

The EST team have definitely enjoyed the Merivale Winter Feasts campaign these past few months, managing to hit Bistro CBD, Lotus, Mad Cow, and Ash St Cellar for a varied assortment of dinners and lunches.  When Candice of the Merivale group extended an invite to the Merivale Spring Party, the official party for of the extension of their successful Winter Feasts campaign, as well as the official launch of their two wines, Felix  and Jasper, I was happy to come along to celebrate.

I feel slightly ashamed to admit that I have absolutely enjoyed our abnormally warm winter this year. I’m sure it’s the result of a combination of natural occurrences but the tiny environmentally friendly part of myself perks up with, ‘Global Warming!’ Whatever the reason it was a balmy night, perfect for the outdoors setting of the Ivy.

The wines are flowing freely as we walk into the Ivy, with waiters standing by the entrance and wandering the grounds offering guests a taste of Merivale’s newest wines. My knowledge of wine as always remains atrocious, and I find as usual Red’s are a little too much for my palate without a full meal in front of me to balance it all out.

Jasper, a light fruity Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand which often gets the poor end of the stick when it comes to wines. For my tastes I find that I prefer Jasper over Felix, with the Sauvingon being a rather easy drink and I could see the bottle disappearing quickly enough. Felix on the other hand is a little heavy for my tastes but it is definitely the type of wine I would enjoy with a slab of meat. Both wines will be made available across all the Merivale restaurants as well as through the new Ivy Bottle Shop.

Candice invites us to follow her into the kitchens and we trundle along only slightly awkwardly snapping our photos as the kitchen staff efficiently put together platters of tasty morsels. The staff are as always somewhat bemused by our antics as we flash awaynd a I cannot help but feel my stomach grumble as platter after platter floats out the door.

My torment is put to an end as we are offered a sample of the Wagyuu steak, the cook mentions that the steak is simply pan seared for a few minutes, rested and served straight to us. The texture of the cut is a little stringier but it all balances out with the great hit in flavour.

The menus for the night are all prominently displayed in the kitchen and can’t help but laugh, thinking of them as a cheat sheet for any absent minded staff members.

Eventually we leave the kitchen and make our way upwards towards Teppanyaki where more appetizers are being prepared. The mini burgers are sight to behold on the platter, the photo is somewhat deceiving as the burgers themselves are easily only a few cm across in diameter. Sadly enough these burgers never make it into my stomach, but I do wish the lucky recipients well.

I manage to snag a few appetizers on the way back downstairs, the vast majority end up straight in my belly but I do manage to make a few exceptions! Sydney has come out in force for the Spring Party and the atmosphere at the Ivy is lively thanks to the free flowing wine and appetizers, however this does not bode well for some of us…

Howie and his shirt are unfortunate recipients of a taste of Felix, thanks to a slightly over inebriated salary man, given my past experiences at wine events I’m simply grateful it wasn’t me spilling the wine!

The Merivale Winter Feasts have been extended until the end of September, Merivale will be offering lunches and dinners starting from $35, the menu offerings vary per restaurant and go from 1 to 3 courses including a glass of wine or a James Squire. Along with the menus, cocktail, sushi and master classes are also being held.

looks like it was a little bit ‘nippy’ towards the end of the night hehe

    few questions..

what type of red was the felix?

im guessing all the meats were wagyu *DROOOOOOOL*, what is the white ?cheese? beneath the wagyu (1st pic) what is the dipping sauce (2nd pic)and what were the other elements of the burger?

i go crazy for wagyu.. apologies for the interrogation =P
