With the snow season upon us, I’ve been popping down to the slopes every odd weekend. A couple of the trips have been those “red-eye” runs (or as I usually call them: “one-dayers”) where we leave Sydney at 2am, snowboard, and then drive home on the same day.
Despite the seemingly crazy tactic to alleviate my need to snowboard, I do get to be deliciously fuelled for the day at Serges Cafe and snack on freshly made doughnuts after.
Serges Cafe is a tiny store-in-a-wall place in the heart of Jindabyne. Despite the early hour we would get there, there’s always a line out the door of hungry customers – waiting to order or get their order.
The fresh, un-buttered roll is usually lightly toasted and filled with juicy, tender bacon (complete with rind) and the over-easy eggs with the yolk broken by quickly swilling the egg shell in it. Generously sauced (served up with your choice of sauce), the bacon and egg roll is F’s perfect breakfast to have before hitting the slopes.
I can’t finish the entire roll myself so early in the day, so I have to be content in grabbing a couple of bites from a willing sponsor (though usually it’s a slightly begrudging F).
Serges also offers a range of muffins, baguettes, and awesome hot chocolate in an large take-away cup.
After a fun-filled (sometimes injury-filled) day on the snow, there’s nothing like relaxing with some doughnuts just before loading the car up for the trip home.
These cinnamon doughnuts are from the canteen just outside Friday Flats, in front of the lift pass counters. You wouldn’t know it just by the looks of the tiny building with its equally tiny order window, but they make the freshest and tastiest doughnuts I have ever eaten.
The outside is crisp with a liberal dusting of cinnamon and sugar, the inside soft, and best of all: the doughnuts are made to order so they are piping hot (hot enough to burn your tongue on – and yes, I’m silly enough to have it happened to me).
We normally have dinner in Cooma at Subway, but a couple of weeks ago we found that they were closed and had to settle for KFC instead. In finding a new regular place to have dinner, we learnt that the Chinese restaurant nearby should be avoided.
I’d like to try this pizzeria in Bredbo that always looks like it’s buzzing whenever we go past it. Has anyone been? What’s everyone’s snow trip regular or favourite eats?

Tina: Heheh that’s what I thought when I first saw it.
Simon Food Favourites: The snow has progressively been getting better. Though we didn’t go last weekend (it was suppose to have been really good) and not going this weekend because of food-related stuff, but I’ll be off to NZ for a week from 8th August! Terribly excited =)
FFichiban: Pretty big – kinda the length of a foot-long sub perhaps?
If you get the chance, try stopping into Breadbo for crepes. There’s a place on the Monaro Hwy that makes fantastic sweet crepes. We missed out on their special of chocolate (?)scrabbled crepes but the apple & sultana one was delicious! Not sure when they open but they close at 5pm.
Oooh this brings back great memories of the snow last year! Doesn’t food taste so much better after a ski session or a session spent freezing?
angela: Oooh, I’m a sucker for crepes – hope we can make it there before they close!
Lorraine: Hehe, sooooo much better for some reason.
thats a nice lookin Bacon and Egg Roll!
hey squishies – the Bredbo pizza place is AWESOME…. the only thing that sucks is that it is only open on Friday, Sat and Sunday….
Another place to try in Cooma is Roses (next to Woolies) Lebanese Restaurant – a little pricey but the food is made with love. The Mixed plate is always a favourite. Another popular place is The Lott (but that’s only open for breakfast and lunch). It’s up the road from the Alpine Hotel. And the BEST pies are in Kuma Pies……
Q – just gimme a buzz next time and I’ll show you the best food in the snowy!!!
Noel: Heheh darn tootin it is
betty: Awww really? Hmm… Will try to fit it in somehow during one of our snow trips =) Thanks for the heads up on that!
Awesome! I would love to eat at all these places, sounds soooo yummy! I’ll definitely give you a buzz and see if you’re free to pig out some ^_^ Thanks!
