Funky Chef, Pyrmont
It’s undeniable that the Plan B $10 Wagyu Burger has almost become a legend in its own right. Not really working in the vicinity I mourned ever having the chance to try it again, however when I walked past Funky Chef and saw a $10 Wagyu Burger up on the board I immediately jumped to the challenge. Not that it took a lot of convincing!
I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a coffee drinker and so don’t really think I can tell when I’ve been served a good vs. bad coffee, it just always seems bitter, hence the mocha. However, one thing is undeniable… pretty latte art makes any coffee appealing! The boys in my team think it’s illegal that I’m a coder that doesn’t like coffee, it’s supposed to be in our genes or something like that. Personally I don’t think coffee even wakes me up! Is that weird?
My co-worker swears by the Phoenix organic cola saying it’s nothing like the typical mass produced cans, the result is almost honey sweet and much less carbonated than I’m used to. I’ve only ever noticed this brand in the local cafes but browsing through their website shows they actually offer a wide range of drinks including hot chocolates!
At first glance the burger doesn’t seem overly different to a normal burger. It’s served simply enough alone on a wide plate, however the burger itself is easily 1/3 larger than Plan B’s burger giving it points on quantity alone. My greedy eye notices the layer of melted cheese AND unmelted cheese which makes my heart jump (if not my arteries).
The real surprise comes when you begin to take the burger apart. I prefer my burgers with tomato sauce and lift the top to spread a layer of sauce and am surprised by a thick dab of beetroot puree! Beetroot is one of those things I just cannot keep off myself when eating it so having it in a spreadable form is a pleasant surprise. The base of the burger is generously buttered inching me ever closer to that heart attack. Bring it on I say!
The meat patty while not as tall as the Plan B burger is definitely filling as it spreads across the wider burger. The meat is lovely and juicy and the table soon falls into silence as we munch away. The burger is a little too large to handle easily I end up slicing it into two in order to handle it cleanly, even in halves by the end of the meal my stomach is groaning and I reluctantly give up my idea of dessert!
By the end of the meal I’m dreading the thought of rolling myself back to the office and just wish that I could take a nap at my table. I do believe I’ve found a worthy opponent for the Plan B burger but also do think that size wise the Plan B burger is a little more suitable for lunch! While the burger may be a once in a while indulgence at Funky Chef I’m sure I’ll be back for the numerous Quiches, sandwiches and lunch boxes I saw available for takeaway.
