Plan B, Becasse

Wagyu burgers for $10

IMG_0424-1

I’ve read about the Wagyu burger on several blogs recently, so I figured it was time I ventured down Kent St to try one of my own. I tend to neglect places which are close to my work place, my work mates tend to stick to the ‘favourites’ so it is often a hard sell to get them to venture down to somewhere like Plan B.

Luckily I have Minh, Timbk2 and Pun Man acting as my sidekicks who are willing to try new things for lunch. They couldn’t resist the lure of a $10 burger, especially if it’s wagyu.

Plan B is an offshoot of Becasse, a little hole in the wall café. On our visit, we arrive shortly before 12pm but it seems the lunch time rush had already hit. We were here for the wagyu burger, but it seemed everyone else was too.

600-day grass fed wagyu beef burger w/ beetroot and caramelised onions ($10)

After about a 15 minute wait for the burger, I was thinking to myself Is this is it ? “. However experience has taught me to never judge a book by it’s cover.

I was quite impressed with the thickness of the patty. It was smokey, fatty, juicy and everything in between. It was slightly pink in the middle, but this worked to my personal preference. The cheese was lacking (or maybe it had just melted into the beef), but if there was any more of it probably would have drowned the natural flavours of the wagyu beef. The burger is finished off by some caramalised onions and a thin piece of beetroot. Becasse doesn’t get full points for creativity, but I guess you can’t really ask for much when your paying only $10 for a wagyu burger. I wonder what the marble score is on the wagyu ? It is pretty damn flavoursome that is for sure.

Minh demonstrates how the burger should be eaten, as it is actually quite hard to bite into the burger considering it’s size. It looks small, but it’s quite dense.

Organic grass fed wagyu steak sandwich $10

Every person seemed to be ordering the burger. I always like to be different, so I ordered this sandwich as well as a sausage roll for ‘research’ purposes. What was suppose to be a cheap lunch has turned into something more.

The lightly toasted sandwich is filled with thin and tender pieces of wagyu steak, tomato, onion jam and aioli. It won’t be in the running for food photo of the year, but it more than makes up for it in terms of taste. The wagyu is really thin, but there is plenty of it which makes the sandwich a joy to eat.

Lamb and smoked paprika sausage roll ($7)

These were quite expensive, so I was expecting something to shock my taste buds.  The pastry is beautifully buttery and flaky and the meat is generous and full of flavour, but for the price I was expecting more. The tomato relish is a nice addition, I quite like that it was served in a little cup.

Plan B serves a mean wagyu burger, and for $10 I would rate it as a pretty damn good lunch. It tastes delicious, but it’s not something you would have too regularly as you would probably get sick of it. They do offer other things on the menu, but it’s the wagyu burger which excels here.

Plan B’s burger is small but tasty. Apparently, the latest ‘it’ burger is the $18 one from Rockpool bar and grill. Relying on you to let us know what it’s like!

That sausage roll looks beautifully golden, and it sounds like it was nice, but you’re right that the price is a bit steep for a small serve. Good on you for getting your workmates to be adventurous!

That burger sounds delicious. I have to admit though, I have never heard of grass-fed Wagyu beef. Was it really fed grasses only, no grains? Was it kept on open pasture? So curious to know, if so, how marbled the beef was, how it would have scored on the Japan scale. Thanks!

the fork on top of the burger is a good indicator the size of the burger. I am yet to try it to compare with the one at Bill’s. You should go to Bill’s and give theirs a try and see what you think.

  10. When I had mine mid last year it wasn’t enormous but it was still big (about 10cms in diameter). Was it about that size now? I noticed they were selling mini ones at TOS for 10 crowns ($10) and they were mini. They’ve changed the sausage rolls too-they used to be amazing smokey bacon and pork ones.

I would probably forgo the beetroot slice, but the cheese and caramelized onions sound like a great compliment to the beef. I was born and raised on grass-fed beef so I appreciate the improved flavor. Much fuller. Did they give a pre-cooked weight on the burger?

Hee hee I agree it could be bigger ;) and more cheese but for 10 dora it’s damn good burger mmmm. I don’t think the marbling is that high though.
Thx man, I am definitely in need for another Plan B injection and going for the sandwich as well this time XD

Ah, I remember the one I had, very fondly. Funny enough, I didn’t actually think it was small. Considering how rich it is (wagyu, buttered brioche..), I could barely finish mine!

I had this today… the burger that is and OMG its was everything and more that i expected it to be…

one thing you didn’t mention about the wagyu beef sandwich was the bread.. its not your normal bread and i still don’t know what they used but it really made the sandwich. it was perfectly toasted and gave the sandwich a beautiful crunch before you hit the tender beef strips covered in the sauce.. $10 well spent!

We started eatshowandtell in 2008, it was meant to be just a journal of where we ate. The first thing I usually do when I'm looking for a restaurant is check out eatability and the restaurant website. But what is usually missing is pictures of the food, how do I know I'm getting what I expect? This blog hopefully plugs that gap.
