Sushi platter from Makoto, Chatswood

So when you’re stuck on dinner ideas, feeling a little Japan-esy, don’t feel like cooking and TREMENDOUSLY hungry… what better idea than to order a sushi platter from your local japanese/sushi store! Makoto, in Chatswood, is known for its fresh, tasty and authentic Japanese food (mainly sushi and sashimi). It is run by the Masuya Group who also run Masuya (in Wynyard), Musashi (in Chinatown), Miso Japanese Teishoku (at World Square Town Hall) and another Makoto (also at World Town Town Hall). In my opinion, this group run some of Sydney’s best Japanese restaurants, with Masuya being one of my favourite places for fresh sushi and sashimi and hot pot. I have yet to try Miso but this is on my list.

Back to the platters… It has been a regular tradition of mine for a few years as I found these platters to be of great value, scrumptious, fresh and satisfying.
Therefore, on one hot summer’s night, I had a sudden craving for some fresh and healthy.

I usually call up around an hour or so before I need the platter and order over the phone. However, you could pickup within 30 minutes but it’s always better to allow more time for them to make up the platter. The wide range of platters are on their website HERE (for the Chatswood one) and HERE (for the city one)
There is a huge selection of platters and each Makoto have their own range (there is a Makoto in the city too. They are run by the same company). My favourites include:

  • New Sakura
  • Sushi Japan
  • Deluxe Combination (this is a bigger platter)
  • Ozzie deluxe

I’m a huge fan of New Sakura but tonight I decided to venture out and try a different one.

Ozzie Deluxe$39.90

The Ozzie Deluxe sushi platter contains between 2-4 pieces each of various different sushi’s including raw salmon, ebi furai (prawn), cooked prawn, seaweed, teriyaki chicken, cooked tuna and california roll. There is approximately 30 pieces of sushi in total.

Other sushi platters are just as good… it just depends on your personal choice of sushi!

Jacob's Creek wine
And to end off… some yummy wine to wash down what I think is a prefect hot summer night’s meal. Refreshing, relaxing and detoxing.
These sushi platters are only available for takeaway. Perfect! I can enjoy delicious delicious sushi in the comfort of my own home. Also, a great choice if you are going for a housewarming or BBQ. So if you are either near Chatswood or in the city on the way home from work… this is a great idea for dinner takeaway!
I even munched on some crunchy soft shell crab goodness on the way home just to “introduce” my appetite of what was to come… :P

YES! I love makoto, well not sure if it’s the same one as my friend took me. It was in the city, had huge queues and I remember having this scallop cream thing on a roll, oh so good so so so so good. That was like 3 years ago though.

Oh and i think i also remembered having some wagyu roll thing at makoto too… ok im inaudible and craving sushi now :D

I wish I lived near a sushi place (or a Masuya outlet), I would love to eat sushi at home, but I find it doesn’t travel well at all (especially on the bus :) ). No matter, I will just have to go and eat in. Looks so fresh and delicious!

Call me crazy, but I’ve walked past Makoto in Chatswood many times and am always baffled by their popularity. I ate there once a long while ago, and wasn’t really impressed by what I had. Especially disliked the coloured sprinkly things they decorated their sushi with. Maybe they’ve done away with those, because the sushi platter you got actually looks alright.

I was always amazed at the queue out the door of this place when I walked past. Sounds like their sushi really is worth the wait.

I am with Y, I’ve been to Makoto many times, and their food is really average, and lack of varieties. I think I prefer Zushi opposite capitol.

When Makoto first came out it was really really good and I used to frequent quite often but then they changed their chefs and increased prices and now its a bit too exxy for what u are getting and not as good :( Masuya and Musashi are still good imo though.

kang: The city one and the Chatswood one (that I went to) are very similar and run by the same people. Whenever I crave sushi, I go and get one of these platters :P

lili – pikeletandpie: They do freshly make the platters… so i think the less time you give them, the fresher they will be :P

shez: They can finish in less than an hour! it’s awesome cos then I don’t have to wait in line either :P

Y: I understand what you mean by the freshness of Makoto. Its really a hit and miss but in my opinion, the platters are quite worth what you pay for.

Arwen from Hoglet K: there’s always a huge line because I think this is one of the best sushi trains in Sydney. But this doesn’t mean that it’s the best place for sushi itself though!

billy@ATFT: ohhh Zushi! I must give it a go!

V: let’s go on a date. I feel like sushi. hahaha!

K: It’s a great dinner idea! Saves the waiting and you can eat it in the comfort of your own home!

FFichiban: I realised the quality has changed quite a bit but when you crave something, you don’t care about the price!

smileona: The platter probably feeds around 3-4 people… depending on how much each person can eat! mmm nomnomnom

We’ve had friends bring the sushi platter along to picnics which has always been a bit hit. I was always fascinated with the logo-stamped tamago :) I want a branding stamp with my logo/name on it!

Betty: the sushi platters are great party ideas. There’s a huge variety. The bigger platter is better…!

Helen: mmm the tamago is my friend’s favourite! The stamp is a mystery!

  15. Makoto is still one of those places that I have always mean to go to but so fr haven’t. The platters look fantastic and a great idea for a dinner party when you are too busy doing other things!
