Pulse Food and Health, Wynyard

Green is the new black ?

Specials of the day

Don’t be fooled by the name of this cafe, it’s not your average ‘health food bar’. You won’t find boring carrot juices and chicken and mayo sandwiches on white bread (nothing wrong with these mind you!). Instead, you’ll find fresh made to order food based on organic ingredients by friendly people who look like they love what they do and if not, they are doing a good job pretending. These guys make green stuff look cool, since all the rage in recent times is organic this and organic that.

I love eating out, but I’m really trying to save money these days. Working in Wynyard often makes this quite difficult. Within walking distance, I have copious amounts of lunch time dwelling options and it is all too tempting to pop out of the office for a walk and a bite to eat. Around one corner I have the the Central Baking Depot, which is a sister store of Bourke St Bakery and within a few minutes walk I have both Max Brennar and Lindt Cafe’s available for a ‘meeting’ destination. Not to mention a few Japanese restaurants and a few food courts within a five minute walk. As you can see, eating at my desk can be quite difficult when everyone else is eating out.

However, one place that has recently kept me coming back is Pulse Food and Health. It is a small, almost hole in the wall style cafe specialising in fresh organic food. I come here mainly for the burgers and salads, but they also serve a nice spread of juices, muffins and a tempting brekky menu which I’m yet to explore. By the looks of it, everything but the sweet stuff in the glass cabinet is made to order. This is part of the reason why I keep coming back as I’m not a fan of some eateries where the foccacias and wraps are pre-made and have been sitting in a glass cabinet since the wee hours of the morning. It’s a refreshing change for this end of town, where everyone seems to be in a rush during lunch.

Sacred Grounds Organic coffee

The hole in the wall feel of this place is even more apparent as it sits roughly 8 people inside on stools and around 8 on the foot path. Inside, there is a decent selection of the current day’s paper and despite eating while facing a wall, it actually lets me escape from the office and concentrate on the fantastic food this place makes. Outside, it’s a good chance to do some ‘observing’ of the lunch time office crowd.

Cappucino ($2.50)

When I find a good coffee joint with consistent barista’s, I often stick to it. At the moment, I’m a daily visitor to Espresso on Sussex Lane who use the awesome Campos coffee beans. The coffee at Pulse is pretty good, it’s strong but creamy, not burnt and not too hot. Most importantly, the coffee doesn’t taste diluted. Oh, and the fact that it’s still $2.50 for a cuppa is good news as alot of places have jacked up their prices to $2.80 within the Wynyard area.

There is an option to pay an extra $3 for any drink (mainly juices) in the glass cabinet and a side of salad.

Or is wagyu the new chicken ?

IMG_0117

I’m noticing alot of pubs and cafés serving up wagyu beef in all sorts of varieties, which is no surprise as it is now readily available to the average consumer like myself. What alot of people don’t realise is, alot of the wagyu is actually grown locally here in Australia and exported. While I do love my beef patties, you can’t go past the fatty taste of wagyu beef.

Wagyu Burger ($10)

The wagyu burger is on the ‘specials’ menu but I think I’ve seen it on there for at least 2 months wheras the other options on the menu are always changing. The burger is packed with grilled wagyu steak with caramalised onion, cheese, tomato relish, aioli, tomato and lettuce. The beef steak is soft and thin but packs a punch in flavour and is decently sized as it struggles to hang off the slightly burnt yet crunchy bun. Squishies doesn’t seem to mind the slight burntness as I see her munching away at her burger contently.

Moroccan Lamb ($10)

My favourite is the Moroccan lamb burger with grilled organic lamb patty, tomato, lettuce, rocket, hummus and peach and date chutney. The lamb patty is cooked medium well, with a dash of pink so it’s not too chewey. It’s full of the classic lamb flavour and the chutney adds some sweetness while the addition of hummus reminds me of eating lamb shish kebabs in Auburn. Once again the bun is toasted with a slightly burnt edge, but it adds something to this burger … not sure what it is but it’s a good thing. This burger is also huge, they are not tight on the thickness of their patties that’s for sure.

IMG_0131

Basic beef ($8.50)

The basic beef burger is the best bang for buck item on the burger menu. On a toasted bun we have grilled organic beef patty, tomato, beetroot, lettuce, aioli and tomato relish. The patty is thick, juicy and has a hint of smokyness. If it’s your first time here, you can’t go wrong with the beef burger.

pfffft a ‘super wrap’ ?

IMG_0129

'Super' wrap ($12)

The super wrap is HUGE, it’s nearly the same width as a rice bowl. It contains not one, but two patties which take up pretty much the entire wrap. The patties are wrapped with cheese, avocado, tomato, portugese sauce, capsicum relish and lettuce. The orange patty on the top is the veggie patty which looks to have a strong presence of chick peas. On the bottom is the organic beef patty. The combination of the patties, avocado and cheese all seems too much for the arteries to handle but the capsicum relish launches a welcoming counter attack in flavour. The super wrap is my port of call when I’m mega hungry at lunch time. I can barely fit this thing in my mouth without stretching my jaw to it’s limits.

There is something about the cups which remind me of the fast food joints you see in American sitcoms and movies. Free water is available inside.

There is a touch of a mediterranean/middle eastern flavour and a dash of modern Australian thrown in for good measure. The staff are friendly and efficient and the food is always consistent, consistently good. During lunch time office hours, this place is absolutely packed and the queue stretch along the modest footpath on Kent St with office workers, students, labourers and all walks of life happily waiting for their food.

I’ve found my new favourite lunch joint, what’s your favourite ?

Hooray for good burger/sammich/wrap joints! That wrap does look very appetising (like you I’m so not into the pre-made sitting-around-forever-in-a-cabinet deal that happens at so many other joints). I’m also not usually into wraps because they end up tasting like soggy bread & lettuce. This one though? Aweeesooommmeeee!

The wrap looks huge! Veggie burger and meat patty gives you the best of both worlds. The Moroccan Lamb burger sounds good too.

Reemski : Indeed! I’m on the lookout for more new places heh

Y : Sit down lunch is so hard at work, wish I could do it more often

Tina : It’s yummy indeed but there are like 10 other burgers I should probably try!

Christie : The Super Wrap is something I even struggle with, but it’s good for making sure I don’t snack too much during the day!

FFichiban : Theres so many lunch options in the City, wish they opened on weekends though no time to try them all.

Shez : This one doesn’t taste soggy, only because they make it on the spot.

Arwen : Speaking of best of both worlds, I often order a Vegetarian Pizza and a Pepperoni Pizza. It’s a strange combo but I love it.

  9. Holy Moley the serves look huge! OK will have to take hubby there when he is feeling peckish :)

Lorraine : It’s huge but good value! Flavours are good too so it’s not just quantity.

Ja : The burger menu is quite extensive but wait till you see the salads too!

Mmmmm.. the food looks really delicious. doesn't help either when i didn't even have lunch yet. but you're lucky to have such a place within walking distance from your work. and doesn't help either since i'm in the U.S. and the restaurant is in Sydney.

We started eatshowandtell in 2008, it was meant to be just a journal of where we ate. The first thing I usually do when I'm looking for a restaurant is check out eatability and the restaurant website. But what is usually missing is pictures of the food, how do I know I'm getting what I expect? This blog hopefully plugs that gap.
