EST interesting eats of 2008
Incase you missed these eats
Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a great NYE, and more importantly a fantastic 2008 with a view to an even better 2009. So what’s your NY resolution ? Our’s is probably to eat out in the Suburbs more as there is alot of good ethnic food out there. However, we also want to maintain this blog as something we just do for fun. There will be times where we won’t post for a few days, but we’ll do our best to keep the blog fresh as most hobbies are only useful if you are active with it. One of the positives of joining the food blogging community is to discover new places to eat reviewed by other bloggers, we are loving it so far!
Anyway, since we started posting on EST ‘properly’ , there have been a few highlight eats which we had some great times and great food. Kang from londoneater actually inspired me to collate this list, so kudos to him. As a result, I’ve collated some of the less recent posts which cover some great restaurants around Sydney.
1. If you feel like authentic French : La Gerbe d’Or
Suburb : Paddington
La Gerbe d’Or was my first forray into authentic French food. I’ve returned here a few times since our first review, I feel like I’m in France whenever I hear Francois’s (Chef and Owner) explanation of each dish in his heavy French accent. The must try foods here are the hot chocolate, Assiette de Pates et cornichons and the bacon which Francois cures himself. Located in Paddington, it makes an ideal destination for breakfast and/or lunch before you head out for an afternoon of shopping.
2. If you feel like authentic Thai : goto Canley Heights & Cabramatta
Suburb : Cabramatta & Canley Heights
Most people I know have only experienced Thai food in the City, Surry Hills and Newtown. While the food does taste good, it’s nothing like what I experienced on the streets of Bangkok. I’m not saying the Thai food in Canley Heights and Cabramatta is as authentic as Thailand, but it’s pretty damn close and alot less tame than what you can find in ‘modern’ Thai restaurants.
If your in Cabramatta, try Phoungen. Their fried rice and salads are amazing, watch the chilli though. In Canley Heights, give 12 Spices a try first and then Three Hippo’s. The food at Three Hippo’s is more like what you will find in the City, Surry Hills and Newtown but they still have dishes which use more authentic ingredients.
3. If you feel like bread & pastry: Bourke St Bakery
Suburb : Surry Hills
Bourke St Bakery does everything so well. From bread, pastry to desserts they never cease to amaze me with their consistant taste and quality of ingredients. Tucked away on the corner of Devonshire and Bourke St in Surry Hills, you can find it by looking for the long queues stretching down the road.
4. If you have that special occasion: Tetsuya’s
Suburb : Sydney City
They say you must visit Tetsuya’s at least once, just to enjoy the experience. Before you go, perhaps have a look at our thoughts to see if it’s right for you. For us, the experience was one of a kind and I’m glad we had the privelege of trying the creative genius of Tetsuya Wakuda who is perhaps one of Japan’s finest ex-pat’s to call Australia home.
5. If you feel like dumplings : goto Ashfield

Suburb : Ashfield
While Din Tai Fung has done a great job in introducing Shanghai cuisine to alot of Sydney siders, Ashfield still holds a place in our hearts for a cheap and authentic Beijing/Shanghai dumpling experience. This year we’ve been to Shanghai Night, New Shanghai and Taste of Shanghai. It’s hard to pick one as the best, you can’t go wrong with any of them. All the restaurants are on Liverpool Road, Ashfield. If your coming from the City, Liverpool Road connects via Parramatta Road. If your coming from the West, just come along the hume highway.
6. If you feel like organic Aussie with a Japanese twist : Cafe Ish
Suburb : Surry Hills
With a rating of 9.1 on eatability, there has to be something good about Cafe Ish. Josh (Chef) does a fantastic job of blending organic Australian ingredients with a Japanese influence. Highlight dishes include Japanese style omelette with soft shell crab and avocado salsa and the kangaroo meat pie. Try out their macaccino as well, a cappuccino with wattleseed’s roasty flavour and macadamia’s sweet mellow flavours infused into their coffee beans.
7. If you feel like shish kebabs : New Star Kebabs
Suburb : Auburn
Auburn is one of the most culturally diverse suburbs in Sydney. While Cabramatta is known for it’s Vietnamese food, Harris Park for it’s Indian , Auburn (Auburn Rd) is known for it’s Turkish food. Try the mixed plate for $19, which is grilled to order on flaming hot charcoals at the front of the restaurant. For dessert, walk 2 minutes up the road and try authentic Turkish sweets at Mado Cafe.
8. If you feel like Moroccon : Souk in the City
Suburb : Surry Hills
The food here is of high quality and the presentation is fantastic. I don’t know if it’s ‘authentic’, but it is a good indication into what Moroccon food has to offer in Sydney. It was a bit weird having rose petals showered on us when we arrived, but it was a nice and unique experience.
9. If you feel like Singapore chilli mud crab : Sinma Laksa House
Suburb : Kingsford
Kingsford is the home of many fantastic Asian restaurant’s, especially along Anzac Parade. One of my favourites is Sinma Laksa House which has one of the best Singapore chilli mud crabs I’ve tasted. My advice is to bring your favourite crusty bread to lap up all the fantastic sauce. They also do some fairly authentic tasting Malaysian/Singapore hawker food too. Parking is plentiful, just park opposite the South Sydney Leagues club. I should probably try their Laksa one day, considering it forms part of the name of the restaurant!
10. If you are near Star City Casino: Oscars
Suburb : Pyrmont
The quality of food here can vary, but it makes a good dinner joint if you ever plan to hit Star City for a night of sensible gambling. They have great cocktails too at $14 a pop.

Happy New Year ^^! Great idea to summarize the great eats of last year. Happy eating in 2009!
