Sydney Fish Market, Pyrmont

Living in Canberra really makes me CRAVE for yummy seafood. I have heard that Sydney fish markets is one of the best fish markets because of the freshness and variety of seafood they get. So with a huge craving for seafood, empty stomach, and a relatively nice day, J & I venture with our friends Matt and Christine to enjoy a lunch feast!

Unlike Tsukiji fish markets in Tokyo, where restaurateurs fight for the freshest fish cuts, we, here in Sydney, fight for counter space just to order and pay. And this is just for the cooked foods! Even paying is way too hectic!

For those that have visited the fish markets before, you will understand there are quite a few shops to pick from. Howard and Linda once told me to go to Claudio’s and this place has never failed to disappoint.

Claudio's
(Located outside the main hall area)

There are a few “staple” things we buy:

Fresh salmon
Raw Salmon – @ $39.99/kg (around $20 in the pic above)
I always try and choose the part of the salmon closest to the stomach area. You could call it the “toro” (stomach). I like the fattiness to this part and when you bite it, the texture is very smooth. I don’t mind the part towards the tail, but its not AS nice…!

Tiger Prawn
Cooked Black Tiger Prawns @ $20.99/kg
The prawns are always very fresh and juicy. I tend to buy the smaller-sized prawns as I have found these to be sweeter than the larger-sized prawns. (Lucky for me, I didn’t have to peel any that day! :) )
And we bought some flying fish roe @ $3.95/box. I love roe! mmmmm.

We ventured inside to buy some of the cooked foods. Usually I pass on the cooked foods as I like to stuff myself with the fresh seafood, but the salt and pepper squid looked so good!

Salt and pepper squid
Salt and pepper squid @ $8.50/small
The outer layer was very tasty and crunchy! I couldn’t stop munching on these as they were nice and small (great snack!)

(hey this doesn’t seem like a lot of food but for some reason, I was STUFFED!) We also bought some orange juice from the fruit store (don’t forget to bring your own cups… ours were 10c a pop!) as well as hot chips ($2.80) to get our carbohydrate fix!

There’s a nice deli with a HUGE range of cheeses:
Selection of cheese

Chinese restaurant
A yum cha restaurant, specialising in seafood (no durrr!)

Lobster
mm lobster!

Oyster cleaning
Fresh oysters
We usually buy oysters too but not this time because J is allergic. :( If you’re after oysters, I’d recommend the place on the left just as you walk into the main hall. It’s known to have the freshest oysters. The Sydney Rock oysters are very popular as they are smaller than the rest (and apprently this makes them juicer and yummier!).

So if you ever make a trip to the fish markets for a scrumptious lunch, don’t forget to pack your picnic basket with:

  • Soy sauce
  • Wasabi
  • Wet wipes and tissues
  • Picnic mat
  • Cups

Parking is a bargain @$2 for an hour but many people park near Wentworth Park or just outside the markets. Either way, parking is not difficult to find.
OH and if you WANT to be shoved, pushed and cut in front of, go on a weekend at lunchtime… otherwise I’d avoid the peak time as best I can. ;P

  1. Did you read the funny article in the ABC offbeat news? The headline was: “Tuna-hugging tourists banned from Tokyo fish market”.

  2. my favourite place to buy fresh oysters and prawns. your lunch looks yummo. prawns can actually be very filling so that’s maybe why you felt full.

  6. I adore that Deli – all those cheeses! It’s heavenly.

  8. Thanks for the tips about having a picnic there! Although I never seem to make it there. It’s such a different atmosphere there than at Tsukiji markets, much more relaxed.

  9. For the heated menu items, I think getting the nice seafood from the markets and walking over the road to the park is the best bet. The ruffians that eat on-site come straight from hell, as evidenced by their driving courtesy displayed while looking for a spot to part in the $2/hr carpark. (referring to most weekends).

The carpark definitely ruins the experience for me. Also note that free parking can be found across the road if you arrive/leave before 8am.
Getting some fresh seafood early, and getting the hell out of there is the best choice!

  10. Sorry for the late responses!

Arwen: Apprently the auctions are open to the public again! I’ll be sure to take some photos… If i can wake up that early!

Simon: Seafood is always plentiful there and for some reason the seafood fills me up really quickly! Must be all the waiting… and the peeling of the prawns :P

Helen: The fish markets is a great place to take tourists! Show people the awesome seafood that Sydney has to offer.

sydneyguyrojoe: mmm sashimi! Hope they had salmon because there’s hardly any salmon sashimi in Japan! AND parking at the park across the road is good too. free and convenient! The park is a nice place for a picnic too!

Miss Honey: mm i could do with some salt and pepper squid right now too… mmm!

Lorraine: Our fish markets is a great day out! Eat lunch there then buy seafood for dinner too :)

Chris S: It’s so hard to find parking especially on the weekends… AND it’s very crowded. A nice picnic across the road is a top idea!
