Sydney Fish Market, Pyrmont
Living in Canberra really makes me CRAVE for yummy seafood. I have heard that Sydney fish markets is one of the best fish markets because of the freshness and variety of seafood they get. So with a huge craving for seafood, empty stomach, and a relatively nice day, J & I venture with our friends Matt and Christine to enjoy a lunch feast!
Unlike Tsukiji fish markets in Tokyo, where restaurateurs fight for the freshest fish cuts, we, here in Sydney, fight for counter space just to order and pay. And this is just for the cooked foods! Even paying is way too hectic!
For those that have visited the fish markets before, you will understand there are quite a few shops to pick from. Howard and Linda once told me to go to Claudio’s and this place has never failed to disappoint.

(Located outside the main hall area)
There are a few “staple” things we buy:

Raw Salmon – @ $39.99/kg (around $20 in the pic above)
I always try and choose the part of the salmon closest to the stomach area. You could call it the “toro” (stomach). I like the fattiness to this part and when you bite it, the texture is very smooth. I don’t mind the part towards the tail, but its not AS nice…!

Cooked Black Tiger Prawns @ $20.99/kg
The prawns are always very fresh and juicy. I tend to buy the smaller-sized prawns as I have found these to be sweeter than the larger-sized prawns. (Lucky for me, I didn’t have to peel any that day!
)
And we bought some flying fish roe @ $3.95/box. I love roe! mmmmm.
We ventured inside to buy some of the cooked foods. Usually I pass on the cooked foods as I like to stuff myself with the fresh seafood, but the salt and pepper squid looked so good!

The “famed” statue outside the popular fried/hot food store.

Salt and pepper squid @ $8.50/small
The outer layer was very tasty and crunchy! I couldn’t stop munching on these as they were nice and small (great snack!)
(hey this doesn’t seem like a lot of food but for some reason, I was STUFFED!) We also bought some orange juice from the fruit store (don’t forget to bring your own cups… ours were 10c a pop!) as well as hot chips ($2.80) to get our carbohydrate fix!
There’s a nice deli with a HUGE range of cheeses:

A yum cha restaurant, specialising in seafood (no durrr!)

We usually buy oysters too but not this time because J is allergic.
If you’re after oysters, I’d recommend the place on the left just as you walk into the main hall. It’s known to have the freshest oysters. The Sydney Rock oysters are very popular as they are smaller than the rest (and apprently this makes them juicer and yummier!).
So if you ever make a trip to the fish markets for a scrumptious lunch, don’t forget to pack your picnic basket with:
- Soy sauce
- Wasabi
- Wet wipes and tissues
- Picnic mat
- Cups
Parking is a bargain @$2 for an hour but many people park near Wentworth Park or just outside the markets. Either way, parking is not difficult to find.
OH and if you WANT to be shoved, pushed and cut in front of, go on a weekend at lunchtime… otherwise I’d avoid the peak time as best I can. ;P
