Silo’s Bakery, Kingston, ACT

With my weekend spent in Canbera, where else would I choose to go for brunch in Canberra than my FAVOURITE bakery/cafe , Silo’s Bakery. Located in the poshy suburb of Kingston, Silo’s is probably a favourite of many others as their pastries, tarts and breads are practically sold out by the time we arrive for lunch.

Silo’s also reminds me of cafe-style brunches and lunches back home in Sydney. There’s a short wait for a table, which I don’t mind as it gives me time to browse at what baked goods are left over. One of my favourites is the chocolate croissant. The outside is always crunchy. The chocolate (dark) is not too sweet. It’s JUST right. mmm! I also like the biscotti from Silos and there are 2 choices for me to choose from today: Almond or Raisin & Walnut. I choose the last bag of almond biscotti and gladly munch on it whilst waiting to be seated.

The atmosphere at Silo’s is all hustle and bustle with those rushing to buy the weekend bread and pastries, whilst those dining are relaxing over a nice cup of coffee, cheese platters, tarts and plates of lunch.

Last time we had lunch here, J had the prosciutto and buffalo mozzerella plate. Today he picks the same thing… This shows how good it is! I decide to choose the Grapefruit, avocado and watercress salad with blue cheese dressing. The coffee here is one of the best in Canberra which makes me wish I lived closer to Kingston.

First we are served a plate of their famous breads: a white baguette and the Silo rye sourdough. They are also VERY generous with the olive oil. mmm!

The wait for food is short and we quickly dig in!

Grapefruit, avocado and watercress salad

Grapefruit, avocado and watercress salad with blue cheese dressing - $18

I’m not a big fan of blue cheese but I thought I’d give this dish a good anyways. Luckily I did. The blue cheese dressing wasn’t very strong so I quite liked the dressing. The combination of vegetables + fruit together in a salad was creative. It gives a bit of sweetness into the usual savoury flavour of a salad. Grapefruit is not known as “sweet” fruit but it gave the salad some juiciness which I found rather fun and exciting to eat.

Prosciutto and buffalo mozzerella

Once again, this plate doesn’t disappoint. J says the prosciutto had a nice salty flavour, which is nicely balanced by the less flavoured buffalo mozzerella. The breadstick is nice and crunchy and we busily dip this in the olive oil.

This meal may not look very filling but it was probably the bread + olive oil that filled up the holes in our tummy.

As we walk out after our scrumptious meal, I think to myself, “Maybe I will make an effort to wake up early to come here for breakfast… just MAYBE…” :P

OVERALL
Food Simple, creative, cafe-style. Some might say its not that great, but food here reminds me of Sydney… home sweet home.
Atmosphere Noisy but relaxing
Value A bit on the expensive side for a cafe, but well worth it. Similar prices to Sydney cafe food.
Would I come again? OF COURSE!
