Danks Steet Festival 2008

Food, music , sun and a great day out

As mentioned on their website, Danks street festival is back. This year, it’ll be bigger, better and louder than before. Friends always rave to us about how much fun the festival is, making it better was the plethora of food stands on offer. With the promise of food, music and a great day out, Linda and I, along with a friend decided it was about time we see what all the fuss is about. As the event started at 10:30am, knowing that city dwellers and food fanatics would be out in full force, we knew we’d have to get in first. Arriving at Dank street at 11am, early as it was, there was already an air of festivity, with a DJ spinning some funky tunes, food stalls organising their offers and art works slowly put out to display.

Our first stop was funnily enough the Danks Street Depot stand.

Danks Street Depot chef’s freshly preparing Lamb Pita

There was a BBQ with lamb being freshly grilled. It would then get transferred to these chef’s and cut immediately for serving.

014

Danks Street Depot Lamb Pita($12)

This simple creation was fantastic as the lamb was seriously tender, but at $12 I expected nothing less. The pita was filled with marinated lamb, yoghurt and avocado salsa.

The fresh food market had an abundence of fresh and organic fruit and vegetables.

066

In season artichokes

065

064

063

Organic Carrots .. not rhubarb (which is behind the carrots)

062

Organic Mushrooms

061

Fuji Apples from Orange ($3/kg)

053

Organic Tomatoes ($12.95/kg)

017

Fresh Mixed Herbs

055

I’ve heard great things about these guys but I was somewhat dissapointed with the Cappucino I ordered.

054

Rasberry Compote with tapioca and coconut milk ($4)

051

I couldn’t believe the price of this bottle of Balsamic Vinegar. A few splashes of this would be worth more than the salad itself.

049

Chocolate Brownies ($4)

046

Paw paw salad from Big Boy Thai

043

042

Chicken, squid and beans being cooked for the Paella

038

Grilled chorizo with bbq onions

039

020

Smoked porked ribs

026

Smoked pork ribs were basted with a sweet and tangy BBQ sauce. The meat was lacking, but the smokey and salty taste more than made up for this shortcoming.

031

 036

Grilled chorizo roll with rocket and onions

Generous portion of chorizo was grilled to perfection. The rocket was welcoming as it help drown out the saltyness of the chorizo (saltyness in a good way mind you.)

033

Seafood mixed plate (prawns , calamari , bbq squid)

029

Chicken Paella

The flavour was outstanding but I found the rice a bit dry on this occasion.

024

Red Star Pizza Cafe – Basil, tomato, fetta cheese, mozarella

035

016

060

Fresh bread was available for purchase, the Kalamata Olive Sourdough is a favourite of mine.

058

Serendipity Ice Cream – Peanut Butter Disaster (Top) & Fig , honey and pistachio (bottom and right) $6 for 2 scoops , $4 for 1 scoop

025

Strawberries and Cream

The strawberries were sauteed lightly in sugar and served with fresh cream.

044

The lovely people from Culligan Water were handing out free cups of chilled water throughout the day. It was a fantastic initiative considering how hot it was.

Despite the large crowd and the heat, the festival was a fantastic celebration of food , art and music. If you missed out this year, make sure you put it in your calendar for next year.

We started eatshowandtell in 2008, it was meant to be just a journal of where we ate. The first thing I usually do when I'm looking for a restaurant is check out eatability and the restaurant website. But what is usually missing is pictures of the food, how do I know I'm getting what I expect? This blog hopefully plugs that gap.
