Sugar Hit : Shangri-La, The Rocks

Plenty of sugar, but no hit

During last year’s Good Food Month, the dessert on offer at the Shangri-La was easily the best of the bunch. Each component of the platter complimented each other and was scrumptious on its own as well. I was pretty excited about going to Shangri-La this year with high expectations and a hint of anxiousness that the Sugar Hit may not be as good.

Cream Fraiche Ice Cream, Strawberry and Rhubarb Mascarpone Dacquoise, Strawberry Shortcake (?); accompanied by Licorice-infused Strawberries

The ice cream was nice and the shortcake, while I suppose a bit too “ordinary” looking next to the other two desserts, was surprisingly good; simple and buttery, and went very well with the strawberry. While the dacquoise looked scrumptious, it only tasted “nice”. The strawberries though were the highlight of the Sugar Hit for me; they were juicy, sweet, and oozed flavour onto the tongue once bitten.

Perhaps expectations were too high, or I was just in a grumpy mood as I came straight from a busy, stressful day at work, or even a combination of both – I felt this year’s Sugar Hit wasn’t quite a “hit” and while it was still quite nice, I missed what they served last year. Must say though, I love the live jazz singer, accompanied by a pianist, they had there – it was quite soothing and entertaining to listen to.

haha yeah, sorry – I forgot about the wine: Brown Brother’s Cienna. Quite a nice wine, not as sweet as the Dolcetto and Syrah, but I thought it complimented well with the dessert (what little I had due to a super empty stomach).

What did you think of the wine poptart?

    Haha! Terrible… Won’t she be upset? =P

i’m not a wino but i could taste the extra sweetness gained from the grapes being picked and hand crushed by virgins. lol two words really: alcoholic ribena. which is a good thing!

and i’m sure she would be but it’s quite an honour to be barred by me :P

I found this year’s sugar hit a bit disappointing too! But the Shangri-La this year was better than what we had at the Inter-Continental and Swissotel. Counting down the days until next October…!

PS Have been hanging about in the background for a while after discovering this blog from grabyourfork – thanks, it’s great :)

Hi flapflap! Thanks for dropping by and glad you like our blog! =)

Yeah, it’s been a bit disappointing and I’ve heard from some of my friends say that Swissotel wasn’t that great as well. =( It’s rather a pity.

I have hopes that Westin and HarbourKitchen will be good! *fingers crossed*
