I have to be honest, I haven’t really heard much about Yoshii – just a passing mention here or there; all I knew was that they make fancy Japanese food. My friend was pretty excited about coming here and his enthusiasm piqued my interest.
Yoshii looks quite reserved from the outside and is comfortably decorated (I really like the cushy chairs!). The table’s nicely set up for our lunch and each place mat, I noted with amusement, was adorned with a white pebble. Judging by the near-minimalism decor, I had a feeling that pebble was to be used for something, but I wasn’t sure of its purpose. I found out its use later when my friend, whilst chatting, casually moved the pebble and balanced his chopsticks on top. It all becomes clear (and so ridiculously obvious).

Five flavoured tofu gnocchi served with Japanese consomme (Shiso and Japanese plum, black sesame, Nori seaweed, Green tea, Ginger)
The gnocchi had very subtle flavours – so subtle in fact that my friend said that it tasted bland… and I could see where he’s coming from. We all weren’t overwhelmed by this dish, but I thought it tasted rather nice and different. Though I must admit, the highlight of it for me was the cute mini tomato (which kind of says something, I suppose).

Slowly braised Wagyu beef cheek in red miso and Brown Brothers Pinot Noir reduction
What disappointment we may have felt for the first dish was wholly and fully compensated by this gorgeous tasting dish. I’ve heard a lot about Wagyu beef, but for some reason never had the chance to taste it. I have been absolutely missing out on something awesome. The beef was so tender and moist – the sauce made it all the more scrumptious. We got a bowl of miso soup and white jasmine rice to go with the beef, which went rather well with the beef. The dish, surprisingly, filled us up quite nicely – not too full, but not wishing for more (though that’s a bit of a lie because I wouldn’t have minded some more of that beef!).

Fish alternate to the beef dish
Ram, being Indian, could not eat the Wagyu beef (poor thing), and our waitress suggested the alternate fish dish. A man of not many words (though he did surprise me on our Tetsuya’s post), he said that this dish was “nice, really nice”. After a bit of badgering, Ram thought that the sauce went brilliantly with the fish and he liked the attention to detail (namely the cut off tops of the cherry tomatoes, whereby when forked, they didn’t roll around). I tried a piece of the fish and it was pretty decent: succulent and tasty. Sadly though, I think my tastebuds were corrupted by the Wagyu, as I much preferred that.
So, I would say that Let’s Do Lunch at Yoshii was a delicious success and should be tried, if only for the Wagyu (just thinking about it is making me entirely too hungry). I’d love to come back to Yoshii hopefully some time soon and try out some the regular dishes on their menu.

heh go to yoshii for the degustation!
hehe so many places to eat at, too little time (and money! haha) – but will definitely try to fit the degustation in somehow. =)
Hi Squishies, definitely try a lunchtime degu. The mid priced ones are great, and beautiful to look at as well as tasty…Great to meet you yesterday!
Hey,
great blog! glad i found it.
just want to clarify one thing. On the gfm website it said the lunch offer was either the gnocchi OR the wagyu, but it sounds like you all got the gnocchi as entree and the wagyu as main?
it that just wishful thinking on my part?
T: Thanks! ^_^ Glad you like it! We thought it was one or the other as well, but we all got both! =D Perhaps it was a misprint on GFM?
