Sugar Hit : Galileo, The Rocks
A good start to Good Food Month
Good Food Month is finally here (for some reason I thought it was last month and was so excited until I was informed that I had it wrong and that broke my heart… just a teensy bit), so we decided to start off our Sugar Hit expedition over the next month at Galileo.
Galileo is located within The Observatory Hotel – a very posh place, where it even smells posh; its decor is that of old Victorian mixed with subtle modernism. I love the feeling you get when you walk into the restaurant (though in a way, it’s not quite your typical restaurant set-up), you can easily imagine the high society ladies in their fashionable dresses drinking tea with pinkies delicately extended and conversing in hushed, evenly modulated tones; the men wearing monocles and brightly polished Hessian boots, chomping on their cigars – but still being rather civilised.
But I digress…
The orange bavarois was quite subtle in flavour, but it was quite nice with the dark chocolate mousse sitting underneath. There’s an alcoholic tasting fig or date (I’m sorry, I have no idea what it was) nested in the dessert’s centre that added an element of surprise – I wasn’t sure if I liked the taste, but I liked how it added a different texture and flavour to the bavarois.
I really enjoyed the mandarin sorbet – it was slightly sour, but refreshing inbetween bites of the bavarois. When I mentioned to a friend about the mandarin sorbet her immediate reaction to it was, “Yuck!”, but it should be tried before writing it off.
The redcurrant sauce confused me a bit, I wasn’t sure what I was suppose to eat it with, so I randomly scraped some off and had it between the sorbet and bavarois. It was aesthetically interesting, the two slashes of red dramatically contrasting with the more pale-coloured desserts, and it tasted okay – a bit sweet-sour.
Galileo only serves the Brown Brothers’ Moscato (which I have no complains of – it’s one of my favourite wines) with their Sugar Hit, but it goes rather well with their choice of desserts. While the Sugar Hit here was pretty decent, it didn’t bowl me over.

Hmm is it just me or do the servings get smaller every year ?
