“This is the best ramen place in Sydney!” , exclaims Mark. What a BIG statement! The best?? Well, I just HAD to check it out for myself to see if this was true. Since I was working in the city and in Sydney, I tagged along to their manly ramen affair @ Tonton to indulge in what was claimed as the “best ramen in Sydney.” Having starved myself all morning, ramen was all I could think about all morning… (Yes… I’m crazy!).
Located at Chiefly Plaza, Tonton is the sister restaurant of Azuma. The walk from Darling Park felt like an eternity, with my tummy grumbling, eagerly awaiting food, as we made a detour to “pick up” a few companions on this “long” journey (including fellow foodie, Miss Squishes… yay!)
On arrival at Chiefly Plaza, I thought Tonton was a restaurant, but to my surprise, it was a part of a stall in the food court. “HMMM”, I thought to myself, but gave that thought the benefit of doubt.
The ramen range is not huge, maybe 8 or so different ramens. They also have a special meal deal: ramen + curry rice = $12. Quite a good deal! I opted for the Shoyu ramen (soy flavoured soup) whilst the rest of my companions went for the Tonton ramen.
I wouldn’t call the seating environment “fancy” as Tonton is just a food court stall, so I can’t really comment on the comfort! So back to the ramen….
Last night, I asked a japanese friend, “What makes a GOOD ramen?”. “The soup and the noodles,” he replies.
As quoted by Mark… “tonton ramen and I love it! It has a sweet and juicy flavour. soft noodles…”

Tonton Ramen – consumed by Mark. A special ‘Tonkotsu’ soup – mildly spiced thick pork broth topped with BBQ Pork.
As I slowly slurped my noodles, in a japanese style (loud!), I found the texture of the noodles were very fresh and elastic-y – just how I like my noodles. =) The soup was a nice strong flavour, not too meaty. It was a little oily, but the soup was still “good” enough to drink. The more I ate, the more I was enjoying my ramen. By the time I finished, I still wanted more but my tummy was telling me to stop as it was filled to maximum capacity.

Shoyu Ramen Soy-flavoured soup topped with BBQ Pork – my ramen (with no slices of pork…)
The curry rice addition for the lunch set contains no meat – which is perfect for the non-meat eaters but I’m not sure what the curry sauce is made of! So don’t quote me as saying the curry rice is vegetarian! It just contains no meat… =)

Curry rice – comes with the lunch set.
My overall comment on Tonton is that I’d most certainly add this place to my “most loved ramen places in Sydney”. So Mark’s claim as the best ramen place has been confirmed by me… I must say, the ramen was pretty awesome! Too bad it’s only available on weekdays AND for lunch only… Or else I’d be visiting this place more often. And bad luck to me because I will no longer be eating lunch on the weekdays in Sydney. However watch out Canberra… here I come… *sigh*

Opens… Monday to Friday
Ooh interesting! How do you compare the ramen to Ryo’s? I still love Ryo’s the best out of all of them for the noodles themselves. In fact I think I like them more than the really famous Ramen places in Tokyo.
Lorraine: I’d have to say I like Ryo’s a little more. The soup had a little more flavour (just to my liking) and there was more vegetables and bamboo shoots =P Now you make me hungry for Ramen!
Yes, I also prefer Ryo’s for that rich of pork broth goodness
Can’t beat that taste.
If you are not far from Darling Park – well you are in luck. Menya is opening a branch just behind the Shellbourne! I’m eagerly awaiting it’s grand opening.
You can also try ichiban boshi in Bondi Junction (not the one inthe citi building) it is fairly decent but not in the same class as menya and tonton… sadly I have been working in melbourne for the past few months and well… there is no such thing as good ramen in melbourne. *cry*
I miss tonton!!
KCC: YES! I saw the sign out there a month ago. I’m eagerly awaiting it’s arrival!
Mark: aww there there… too bad. You’ll just have to go to Ryo’s on the weekend
I don’t know they are related but there is another TonTon on George Street near the theatres. It’s hidden away in a small ally just near the KFC, we discovered it by accident on Sunday; a happy accident!
Maybe they aren’t quite as good as Ryo’s for a cold winter broth (and definitely for the noodles) but I think their lighter summer ones were better.
