Gazebo Wine Garden, Elizabeth Bay

On a windy and cold, yet bright, sunny day, we ventured to Gazebo Wine Garden for a boozy birthday lunch. That morning, I had already checked out the website to see what was on order. (BTW the website is quite nice but thats because its flash…). “MMMM sangria for lunch! Can’t wait!”, I thought as I rushed to complete my assignment before running off to enjoy a lunch in the sun. I had heard that the sangrias were quite nice here, so was very keen to try it out.

After being an hour or so late (I have set the standards for the term “being fashionably late”)…, my fellow diners had already started on the sangria! We started off with a “White Wine” Sangria – with Lychee’s, lemon wedges & mint, orange liqueur & Bianco Sweet Italian Vermouth, topped with lemonade. MMMM tasty!

Next… the FOOD! I’m a lover for both crab and fritters, so the Blue swimmer crab & corn fritters with cucumber yoghurt would be my obvious dish choice.

The crab fritters didn’t come out as I expected and the taste was quite average. Although being only five small portions, they were surprisingly filling!
The side of fries were a hit though!

My fellow diners had….

Blue swimmer crab, chilli pasta, spinach, lemon & white wine

The pasta looked equally as good as its taste! Not very chilli but still had a nice flavour.

Very gourmet-looking fish and chips, served in a newspaper-like paper cone.

Tasting platter of the day (for 2)

For lunch, they have a special each day. On the saturday, the special was the tasting platter of the chef’s creations. It included prawn and chorizo skewer, octopus in a tomato-base sauce, fresh oysters, olives, prosciutto, roasted sweet potato and a small side salad. The flavours of the platter were very appetising. Not sure if it would fill two hungry tummies, but it sure did fill up the birthday girl’s tummy!

Roast duck & wild mushroom pie, buttered greens

Interesting looking pie! The pastry was quite crunchy. Apprently (and unfortunately), the flavour was quite average as well.

Stuffed chicken breast with lemon, parsley & garlic, roasted kipflers

Nice presentation but the chicken was a little bland. (I think he was more into the tasting platter than his own dish! =P)

And lastly, this entree size dish was very flavoursome. It was like a mushroom risotto but the mushroom was the highlight of the dish! I love mushrooms…

Overall, Gazebo Wine Garden is a lovely place for an outdoor lunch. Their outdoor area is very relaxing with the couches on one side, outdoor heaters and nice atmosphere. The jugs of sangrias were the highlight of the day. The indoor interior is also very trendy looking. Parking is a little hard to find though since the place is located on the outskirts of Kings Cross. Nice place for groups as their tables are quite big.

It all looks spectacular (especially the pie top and styling of the fish & chips) but interesting to see that the taste didn’t always follow suit!

Oooh this is one of the venues my work owns but I haven’t been there yet. Shame to hear the food was not quite as good as expected though!
