Sea Gardens, Prevelly Park

A few friends and I decided to spend a weekend in the Margaret River region, which is located in Western Australia – about 6 hours from Perth (yes, it was a massively long drive, but so so so worth it).

We spent long hours in the car, stopped by places to be all touristy, and just wanted to wrap up our first day in WA watching the sunset whilst having dinner.

Unfortunately, where we were, there weren’t many restaurants that fit the bill, but we did find a nice little cafe sitting on top of a low hill. It would have had a nice view of the sunset over the ocean if it weren’t for the big gumtree out in front (and perhaps if there weren’t so many clouds in the sky).

Scotch fillet on spinach mash with caramelised beets, shallots, and red wine jus

The fillet was succulent and wasn’t chewy; the mash just heavenly. Sokhan loved this dish, which sated her craving for steak.

Vegetarian Deluxe Pizza (Sweet Potato, Tomato, Feta, Olives, Spinach, and Herbs)

The thin-based pizza was wonderfully crunchy (but not hard) and there was a generous amount of tomato sauce (which I personally loved). The topping combination was unusual for us, but they complemented each other quite well. I think it would have been a bit bland if it weren’t for the tomato sauce.

Fettucine with Garlic Prawns, Smoked Salmon, Olives in a Cream Sauce

This was my dish and I absolutely adored it. The sauce was perfect: light, tasty, and had a hint of smoky salmon. They weren’t stingy with the prawns or salmon. I have to admit though, I don’t really like olives unless they’re sliced and on a pizza (I find the flavour to be too strong and overpowering), so I gave them to Ruby.

We were wondering why they weren’t packed out because the food was divine and the service great… and we realised that we had a super early dinner at about 4:30pm (that 2-hour time difference really makes… well… a difference – our appetites were all out of whack to normal eating hours) and by the time we finished, people had started to trickle in.

Sea Gardens is owned and operated by a husband and wife team, David and Shelley Futter. She use to live in Sydney but was so sick of the hustle-bustle of the Big Smoke that they decided to move to somewhere much nicer and agreeable.

Shelley’s very friendly, laid back, and quite chatty. We asked her about the Wine Festival that was on that weekend and while she wasn’t sure about the exact details, she made efforts to find out for us. When she did, Shelley persuaded us to take her newspaper so we could go over it in our own time. The rest of the staff was just as friendly and laid back as she was. We thought that perhaps she had the right idea in moving to somewhere so relaxing… and who could get sick of almost sunset views over the ocean?

If you ever find yourself in the neighbourhood, drop by Sea Gardens… I know we would drop by again.
